Hormuz shut: pistachios and cashews firm, coffee and macadamias ease

May was another month in which the Strait of Hormuz, closed since early March, shaped Gulf trade, fuel costs and freight. Pistachios heading into a US off-year, Vietnamese cashews above US$7,000/t and tight Black Sea seed supply supported prices, while Brazil’s expected record coffee harvest and growing macadamia supply pulled prices lower; at month-end, Asia–Mediterranean freight jumped 20% in a week.

Sunflower seeds Rising

Black Sea sunflower seed runs short, prices firm

In Ukraine, old-crop seed stocks are running out and crushing margins turned negative by US$20–25/t; some plants have idled or switched to rapeseed and soybeans. Global macadamia supply is expected to rise about 15% in 2026 to nearly 393,000 t in-shell, led by Australia, South Africa, China and East Africa. Australia is heading for a record-level harvest as young orchards mature and recover from 2025 weather damage, with fewer rejects. Demand is growing but more slowly than supply: farm-gate prices are subdued, stocks are comfortable and US tariffs keep buyers cautious.
